In hopes of providing a traditional TV user experience DirecTV has partnered with NDS VideoGuard. VideoGuard Connect is a DRM (Digital Rights Management) solution for multi-platform pay-TV that protects the delivery and consumption of premium content. Their plan is to enable DirecTV to implement linear channels, on-demand events and download services over the open internet providing a traditional TV user experience. This will implement the pay-TV plan DirecTV already has in place but also provide subscribers the ability to view TV anytime and anywhere from any outlet. They will also ensure that the only ones watching the content will be DirecTV pay-TV subscribers. According to the NDS website over one-third of the world’s digital pay-TV households rely on NDS technologies to discover, navigate, or interact with content.
“Our subscribers expect quality content and the best viewing experience from DIRECTV,” said Romulo Pontual, Chief Technology Officer at DirecTV. “We will use VideoGuard Connects highly secure DRM to ensure content producers and DirecTV can support consumers’ growing desire for a video experience on multiple screens. VideoGuard Connect is a valuable addition to our portfolio of solutions from NDS.”
DirecTV currently engage the services of a number of NDS technologies to ensure and enable their platform including VideoGuard ® Conditional Access (CA), NDS Dynamic ™ advanced advertising technology, NDS middleware and DVR technology. This joint venture extends the relationship between NDS and DirecTV and furthers the two companies’ mutual business interests.
